On Monday Chris found a crocodile in his cornflakes. It was green and scaly and had a very wicked grin.
“Hello, little boy! said the crocodile. I’ve come to live with you!”
Chris looked at the crocodile. It was only as big as his finger but it had already eaten a hole in the plastic bag it had arrived in. Now it was admiring a picture of itself on the back of the cornflakes box.
“I don’t think my mum allows me to keep crocodiles,” said Chris uncertainly. “I don’t even know what they eat!”
The crocodile nodded its scaly head and grinned, showing rows of sharp, white, shiny teeth.
“Oh don’t worry about that!” he said. “Crocodiles eat anything!”
Then the crocodile jumped into Chris’ cornflakes – and began to eat them!
“What a terrible noise Christopher” called Mum from the kitchen. “Please eat with your mouth closed!”
“It isn’t me!” shouted Chris. “It’s the crocodile!
“Don’t be silly Chris! And don’t make a mess in there!”
The crocodile had finished all the cornflakes – and he had made a terrible mess! Sugar had been spilt all over the place and there were milky footprints to show where the crocodile had walked all over the tablecloth.
“Mum’s going to be cross,” said Chris. “AND she’s going to say it was me! I think I had better take you to school in case you get into any more trouble.”
When he got to school Chris put the crocodile into his pencil case. He left it just a little bit open in case the crocodile needed to breathe. While he was in the playground, the crocodile got out!
“Whose book is this!” demanded the teacher when they got back in. She was holding up Chris’ book. And it was a mess! There were dirty little marks all over it! And the edges had been eaten! The teacher told Chris off and he had to do his work all over again! When Chris put his hand into his pencil case – he got a surprise! His pencils had all gone! And the crocodile had grown! Now it was as long as his hand!
“Where are my pencils? And why did you do that to my book?” said Chris.
The crocodile grinned at him. Its teeth weren’t white now. They were black..and sharp...and shiny!
“The pencils? I ate them!” the crocodile said. “Then I went for a walk...and had a taste of your book! But I didn’t like it very much. Have you got anything else to eat?”
“NO!” said Chris. And he zipped the pencil case all the way closed.
He did his work quickly and then got out his project book.
“Please Miss,” said Chris. “Could I get a book from the library?”
The teacher looked at him with a frown. “Yes you may Christopher. As long as you promise not to EAT this one!”
The rest of the class laughed. Chris didn’t say anything. He knew they wouldn’t believe him anyway!
He found a good book on crocodiles. It had a picture of a great big MONSTER crocodile on the front.
“I hope mine doesn’t grow THAT big,” thought Chris. It seemed to be growing as it slept! And now the pencil case was bulging.
On the fist page of the book it said – “Crocodiles can grow to an ENORMOUS size. They eat almost anything when they are little – but when they get big they eat lots of fish and all kinds of meat.”
At the bottom of the page was a picture of an ENORMOUS crocodile – chasing a boy! Chris slammed the book shut – he didn’t want the little crocodile to read that and get any big ideas!
At lunchtime Chris sneaked the crocodile into his lunchbox. He was just outside the lunch room when – out jumped Big Bob the Bully!
Big Bob always spent his canteen money on the way to school and then stole the other children’s lunches!
“Gimme yer lunch!” he demanded. And he grabbed Chris’ lunchbox.
“No!” shouted Chris. But Big Bob wasn’t listening. He pulled open the box and plunged his hand inside.
“YOW!” he roared. All the children came running out. Big Bob ? Howling? The crocodile had bitten him – HARD!
“Wow!” said the children when they saw the crocodile.
“YIKES!” said the dinner lady as she ran away.
“Yum, yum!” said the crocodile, licking his lips. “What’s for afters?”
When the police…and the army…and the zoo keepers arrived, they found the crocodile having a great time. All the children had fed it their lunches and it had grown almost as long as the headmaster’s car – which it was now eating as desert! It was quite happy to be driven away to the zoo, especially when he heard that there would be plenty of MEAT!
By the time Chris got home, he was starving! It had been a very busy day – and the crocodile had eaten al his lunch.
“Mum!” he called. “Can I have some Sugar Pops?”
“Yes,” called Mum. “There’s a new box in the cupboard.”
Chris got out a big bowl and opened the new box.
“I’m so hungry!” said Chris as he poured out the Sugar Pops.
Plink! Plonk!
Two plastic packages fell into his bowl.
Two tiny TIGERS! With sharp teeth and swishing tails looked up at him and growled…
“We’re hungry too!”
